Sometimes the words "counseling" and "psychotherapy" are used interchangeably. I see them as very different.
Counseling is more about content and psychotherapy is more about process.
A "counselor" gives advice on a specific problem or need based on knowledge and research . Usually counseling is used to deal with an "external" problem or something that is happening to a person.
Psychotherapy is a process that involves developing a trusting partnership between the therapist and the client that allows for the exploration of internal feelings, beliefs, thoughts and behaviors that have been roadblocks to personal happiness and fulfillment.
Together we will uncover answers and strategies to relieve emotional discomfort and develop more effective ways to respond to problems.
